Driven by a sense of urgency, solo projects took shape —responding to today’s society and questioning the contemporary music scene itself. The results range from minimalist concerts that invite pure listening to high-tech setups transforming instruments into cyborgs.
In his composition You'll Never Be Alone Anymore, Karel Goeyvaerts asks four individuals with untrained ears to control 12 sine wave oscillators ranging from infrasound to ultrasound. The process must be carried out as slowly as possible, while the quartet tries to stay synchronized throughout.
The result is a constantly shifting cluster of sound, moving from the dark unknown to cosmic heights.
Goeyvaerts wrote a score for solo bass clarinet to accompany this process, recorded on tape. The score consists partly of musical instructions and partly of psychological cues.
With the help of engineer Roel Das, I reconstructed the original oscillators to create a participatory re-enactment of the piece, with the involvement of audience volunteers.

A story of an instrument —my instrument, the clarinet. But also a reflection on what it means to play an acoustic instrument in a world dominated by samples and electronic sound.
Through works by Sciarrino, Lucier, and Stefan Prins, the clarinet is gradually deconstructed, ultimately merging with its digital avatar.
